Hangzhou

Hangzhou City, abbreviated as “Hang,” is a prefecture-level city under Zhejiang Province, serving as the provincial capital, a sub-provincial city, a megacity, the central city of the Yangtze River Delta G60 Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, and the core city of the Hangzhou Metropolitan Area. Located in northern Zhejiang Province, downstream of the Qiantang River, and at the southern end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, it covers a total area of 16,850 square kilometers.

The topography of Hangzhou slopes gradually from west to east, featuring a mix of hills, mountains, and plains. It has a subtropical monsoon climate with distinct seasons and abundant rainfall. Hangzhou is among China's first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities and stands as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, renowned throughout history as the “Famous Prefecture of the Southeast.” Excavations at the Kuahuqiao Site reveal human habitation dating back over 8,000 years. The Liangzhu Culture, flourishing more than 5,000 years ago, is hailed as the “Dawn of Chinese Civilization.” After the Qin Dynasty unified the six states, a county seat was established at the foot of Lingyin Mountain, named Qiantang. In the ninth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (589 AD), Qiantang Commandery was abolished and Hangzhou was established, marking the first historical appearance of the name Hangzhou. During the Five Dynasties period, the Wuyue Kingdom and the Southern Song Dynasty both established their capitals in Hangzhou. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), Qiantang County and Renhe County were merged to form Hang County. In the sixteenth year of the Republic (1927), the urban areas of Hang County and other regions were designated to establish Hangzhou City.

Hangzhou is designated by the State Council as a key central city in eastern China, an international comprehensive transportation hub, a national digital economy innovation center, a regional hub for scientific and technological innovation, an advanced manufacturing base, a center for modern services in eastern China, and an international tourism destination. Its five major industrial ecosystems encompass smart IoT, biopharmaceuticals, high-end equipment, new materials, and green energy.
